Success at Silverstone

The Great Escape Classic Car Hire sponsored BMW 1600ti race car achieved another win at Silverstone in the hands of Tony Hunting, our Technical Director. The car, which is owned and co-piloted by David Cornwallis drove to the finish line despite a non-fault dalliance with another car on the track.
Tony, who manages our Suffolk site and maintains Great Escape's cars through his business GTR Classics, maintains the car for David. The BMW is an ultra rare 1600ti that has been lightened and prepared for racing, but is very close to standard specification.
Great Escape provides workshop space and contributes to the funding for the race car.

70 people, 30 cars, 6 days, 3 events, 1 Goodwood

The team at Great Escape Classic Car Hire is starting to unwind after its most successful Gopdwood Revival ever. Great Escape provided 30 cars to various corporate and private clients during the Goodwood Weekend in September, with a 100% reliability rate across the fleet.
The company organised three major events for corporate clients during the show and also provided a large number of cars to private self drive hire clients from its bases in Yorkshire, Cotswolds, London and Suffolk. This included two events from Winchester and Chichester which involved Great Escape's specialist logistics partner providing dedicated articulated trucks to move the vehicles.
"The Goodwood Revival gets biggers every year for us," says Graham Eason of Great Escape. "We ran three corporate events during the Revival and also provided self drive hire to private customers on our busiest weekend of the year.
"The fleet was 100% reliable and ever customer came back satisfied. I am pleased that we are able to successfully support and manage activity on this scale."
Great Escape Classic Car Hire is the UK's largest classic car hire company with a fleet of over 50 vehicles for self drive rental from 6 UK locations. For more information on Great Escape's corporate and private client packages, call 01527 893733 or visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/.

BMW 1600ti ready for Silverstone

When Great Escape Classic Car Hire's Technical Director Tony Hunting brought the http://www.davidcornwallis.co.uk/ BMW 1600ti race car in for prepping at our Worcestershire workshop before its outing at Silverstone, it was a great opportunity for the team to get together before the camera with the car.

Great Escape MD Graham Eason, Operations Manager Russ Pemberton and Tony posed for a snapshot after the car had been fetled on the Great Escape ramp. The BMW runs in the Swinging Sixties championship co-driven by Tony with David Cornwallis, who owns the car and runs a company specialising in refurbished Thwaites dumper trucks. Great Escape provides sponsorship for the duo throughout the season.

The BMW's next outing is at Silverstone on September 16th when it will compete in the Swinging Sixties championship. The car required work to the exhaust and bodywork after a minor incident at Anglesey track.

Russ joins the Great Escape team

Great Escape Classic Car Hire, the UK's largest classic car hire company, has appointed Russ Pemberton as Operations Manager based at its Worcestershire HQ. The new role has been created to improve customer service and coordinate hire activity across Great Escape's six locations.

Russ joins Great Escape after 32 years in the West Midlands police force. He is a lifelong classic Ford enthusiast and owns two immaculate Ford Escorts - a 1600 'big wing' rally car and a RS2000 road car. In his new role Russ will be responsible for the day to day operation of Great Escape including managing the bookings and enquiries office and organising vehicle logistics and maintenance.

The appointment of an Operations Manager reflects Great Escape's growth during 2011. Since 2009 the company has grown from a single site with 20 cars to 6 UK locations with a fleet of 50 classic cars for hire, the largest in the Britain.

"I am very pleased to welcome Russ to the team," says Graham Eason of Great Escape. "Our growth means we need someone like Russ to manage our day to day operations and ensure the business runs smoothly for the benefit of customers."

Great Escape was established in 2006 as a hobby business by Graham Eason. When Graham was made redundant in 2009 he was able to focus on the company's growth. Great Escape now provides cars for daily, weekly and weekend self drive hires, TV and advertising shoots and corporate events.

E Type coupe back after rebuild

We've got our beautiful 1970 Jaguar E Type 4.2 coupe back after a 3 month, £5,000 refurbishment by a classic Jaguar specialist. The car will rejoin Great Escape Classic Car Hire's rental fleet in Suffolk based near Stowmarket.

The Jaguar E Type has been a popular part of our hire fleet for several years but we took the decision earlier this year to withdraw it and treat it to a major overhaul. The work included some attention to the rear suspension, engine overhaul, new tyres and a brake refurbishment. The work was entrusted to a specialist and has improved the car significantly. We have begun testing the car and it runs beautifully with a sweet and smooth engine and surefooted roadholding.

Great Escape Classic Car Hire has the largest fleet of Jaguar E Types for hire in the UK including two V12 convertibles, one V12 coupe and the 4.2 litre coupe. Jaguar E Types can be hired from Great Escape locations in Suffolk, Cotswolds and Yorkshire. The perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Jaguar E Type.

You can find out more about the Jaguar E Type for hire by visiting http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/ or call 01527 893733.

They like driving in our car

The Great Escape Classic Car Hire Morris Minor Convertible in Suffolk is in the limelight again. This time Leigh Operatic & Dramatic Society (LODS) has hired it to film a promotional video for their production of the Madness musical Our House.

80s pop sensations Madness drove a white Morris Minor Convertible in the video for their 1982 Top 10 smash Driving in my Car. This evergreen song features in the West End musical Our House so the car was an obvious choice for the Society's video. They are using the car to promote the production by filming it driving through the town.

Great Escape Classic Car Hire worked with the society to provide the car at short notice. Our car in Suffolk is one of three identical Morris Minor convertible cars that we provide for hire (the others are in Yorkshire and Worcestershire). All three cars are identical to the car used in the Driving in my Car video - white with a burgundy roof and interior

To watch the Madness video on Youtube use the link below.

The LODS production of Our House is showing from 4th to 7th May 2011.

Great Escape gets moving

Great Escape Classic Car Hire is starting 2011 by moving its Worcestershire HQ to larger premises to cope with its expansion. The company has taken on more administration staff and added a new on-site servicing workshop.
The new site in Astwood Bank near Stratford Upon Avon is just 3 miles from the old Worcestershire site so just as convenient for the Cotswolds and easy to reach from the M5, M40 and M42. It has space for the Worcestershire fleet's 20 vehicles as well as increased office space. Great Escape is also installing its own vehicle servicing workshop operated by a specialist classic car mechanic. This facility will support all of the Worcestershire cars and coordinate servicing and maintenance of the rest of Great Escapes 50-car fleet.
The move means that Great Escape can consolidate its growth during 2010 with better administration and further improvements to fleet reliability.
"We grew very quickly during 2010, which inevitably put a strain on the business," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape Classic Car Hire. "The new unit, servicing facilities and additional administration staff enable us to maintain the high standards of customer service that are vital to our business."
Great Escape Classic Car Hire is the UK's largest classic car hire company with a fleet of over 50 classic and sports cars for rental from 6 UK locations. For more information call 01527 893733 or visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/.

A Great V8

The Great Escape Classic Car Hire Rover SD1 Vitesse has been a bit of a star this year. It's featured in three classic car magazines so far, including a weekend tour of Suffolk organised by our sister company The Getaway Driver.
So we thought it was about time we put some miles on the car ourselves. At Great Escape we generally use a selection of the cars as our daily drivers, partly to keep them active (particularly during the winter) and also to help us keep track of how well they are running.
The Rover was therefore pressed into service when we needed to collect some bulky parts for our project Alfa Romeo Spider. The parts - a new set of wheels and a leather interior - were down in deepest darkest Kent, 160 miles from our Worcestershire base. To complicate matters a little we also need to pick up some office furniture in Kingswinford near Dudley.
On a -6 degree Monday morning we fired up the lusty V8, warmed it through and hit the road. The Rover is fitted with the rare homologation special Twin Plenum version of the venerable Rover 3500 V8 and is fitted with fuel injection, so it pushes out a very healthy 190 bhp. This is mated to a five speed manual gearbox, that stirs the torquey motor along nicely.
We left rural Worcestershire, jostled with the traffic up the M5 then nudged along through endless traffic lights to Kingswinford. With the back seat folded the capacious Rover swallowed the big cabinet. Then it was back down to our Worcestershire base to drop the cabinet and hit the road south.
The Rover SD1 was designed to munch miles under the tutelage of senior executives who wanted comfort as well as pace. And 25 years after this example was made it still does the job admirably. The sports suspension is a little too bouncy but the big seats - which really are like an armchair - and light steering make long distances effortless. But it really is all about that sonrous V8 - it rumbles silently at 75, barely above tickover, with plenty of power available instantly. Only the slightly odd driving position - knees up, arms stretched - and the non-standard big bore exhaust fitted by a previous owner (which rumbles a little too much for our aging ears) detract from the overall experience. Oh, and the shockingly bad build quality - this is a car that feels like it could easily just collapse if the wind gets up too much. But you forget all that when you exercise the V8. It's a peach of an engine, smooth and very torquey, pulling from low revs right round to the red line in a seamless flow of power. Every gearchange is a joy as it brings the motor back to the start of the slope. The Rover V8 was so ubiquitous for so long that it is easy to forget just how good it was - good enough to power everything from Land Rovers to TVRs.
The rumbling Rover drew plenty of admiring glances from fellow road users and during our service station breaks. It really is a great looking car, possibly the best looking saloon car of the last 30 years. Sure, it's a pastiche of the Ferrari Daytona but what better inspiration can there be?
We circuited the M25, collected the parts (4 wheels and tyres, 2 seats and 2 door cards) with space to spare and headed back, fortunately avoiding the late afternoon snarl. The only hold up along the journey was an accident near the M23 - despite stop start driving the 25 year old car behaved itself and the temperature guage remained resolutely at 90.
In all we spent over 8 hours driving the big Rover and covered 370 miles at 30 mpg. Not bad for a brutish, big-horsepower supersaloon.

Final countdown to tourism award

We are celebrating the news that Great Escape Classic Car Hire has been named a finalist in the prestigious Heart of England Excellence in Tourism 2010 Best Tourism Experience category. The news follows a lengthy application process and face-to-face vetting by the judging team on site.
Great Escape is up against big names from the regional tourism industry for this most coveted accolade. Its is the first award we've ever entered in our short 4 year history and we've got our fingers crossed for the announcement at the Awards ceremony on 21st October.
The judges were impressed with our standard of customer service, rapid growth and our partnership approach to working with local tourism suppliers. Every year Great Escape brings thousands of people to the region specifically to sample our cars and this benefits accommodation, restaurant and attraction providers. The judges also liked our new Getaway Driver concept, which puts together bespoke weekend break packages for customers.
"We are absolutely over the moon to reach the finals," says Graham Eason of Great Escape Classic Car Hire. "We're just a small company up against some big names in tourism so we're really pleased to have got this far. We've got everything crossed for the announcement in October.
"Creating a great customer experience is really important to us - as is fairness, honesty and transparency. I think the judges liked our approach."
The winner of the Best Tourism Experience category is announced at the Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Awards dinner on 21st October, held in the Great Hall at the University of Birmingham.

Milestone for Alfa Romeo Spider

It's time to raise a glass to our long-serving Alfa Romeo Spider. This car has been on the Great Escape Classic Car Hire rental fleet since day one nearly four years ago - it was one of the first two cars we offered for hire, alongside our Jensen Interceptor. And now it's passed a landmark - 100,000 kms. Ok, so its only 62,000 miles but we think the little car deserves its moment of glory.
We bought the immaculate Alfa Romeo Spider in 2006 when it had just 51,000 kms on the clock. In the intervening years it has been one of our most popular hire cars with glowing feedback from customers. And it has been utterly reliable.

Belying Alfa Romeo's reputation for building fragile cars with electrics designed and assembled by people who apparently don't know their AC from their and DC, our Alfa Romeo Spider has been the most reliable car on our fleet. It probably helps that the car wasn't built by Alfa Romeo - it was assembled by Pininfarina, who executed the elegant Series 4 redesign of our car - and that it is relatively new compared to some of our cars. But 50,000 kms in less than 4 years at the hands of hundreds of enthusiastic drivers is testament to what a great car it is. The Alfa Romeo has never broken down on hire and has only needed a clutch, starter motor, brake pads and discs and an electric window motor.

We're so impressed by the Alfa Romeo that we've added a second Alfa Romeo Spider located at our base in Suffolk. Although we've added a couple of MGBs in the intervening years, we still have a soft spot for the British roadster's Italian rival. To find out more about the remarkable Alfa Romeo visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/ or call 01527 893733. Prices start at £165 for 24 hours.

MGB Buzzes into Worcestershire

Great Escape Classic Car Hire has added a sixth MG to its self drive rental fleet in the UK with the addition of a MGB roadster to its Cotswolds fleet. The 1971 chrome bumper teal blue convertible is the fourth MGB on the company's hire fleet and complements the company's MGBs in Dorset and Yorkshire. Great Escape also has a MGA in Dorset and MG TD in Suffolk.
The MGB is arguably Britain's most popular classic car with a huge owners club and strong following. A few minutes behind the wheel of the Great Escape car and it is easy to see why - simple to drive, powerful, stylish and engaging, the MGB is everything a weekend getaway car should be.
"We only began adding MGBs to our fleet hire fleet in late 2009 in response to customer demand," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape. "But I've been amazed at the popularity of these cars - customers love them and we like them too because they are rugged and reliable."
The Great Escape Classic Car Hire MGB roadster for hire in Worcestershire is available backed by the company's normal comprehensive hire package. Prices start at £165 for 24 hours and include a full 24 hours use, unlimited mileage, insurance for 1 driver and full AA breakdown cover.
Great Escape operates from five locations in the UK - Cotswolds, Shropshire, Yorkshire, Suffolk and Dorset. For more details on the MGB click here or call 01527 893733. or visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/.

Great Escape Reaches Regional Tourism Awards Shortlist

It is beginners luck for Great Escape Classic Car Hire, which has been named as one of four companies shortlisted for the Best Tourism Experience category in the Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Awards 2010. These are the first awards that the company has ever entered in its four year history and the small family firm faced stiff competition from large regional tourism experiences to reach the shortlist.

The Heart of England Best Tourism Experience recognises high performance in customer care, service quality and marketing. Great Escape impressed the judges with its partnership approach, working with local restaurants and accommodation and activity providers to create complete weekend breaks for customers under its Getaway Driver brand.

Great Escape Classic Car Hire was set up 4 years ago by Graham Eason with just two cars. Today the company has a fleet of over 50 classic vehicles operating from four sites in Worcestershire, Suffolk, Yorkshire and Dorset. When Graham was made redundant from his day job working for a construction company he was able to focus full time on the business and it has grown significantly in the last 12 months. Great Escape is now the largest classic car hire company in the UK and a leading provider of cars to TV, film and advertising companies.

“We are over the moon to reach the shortlist,” says Graham Eason of Great Escape. “From day one we have tried to do something different – a different choice of cars, higher standards of presentation and service and high standards of vehicle preparation and maintenance. It seems that the judges were also impressed by that.

“We have had to work hard to combat the effects of the recession. By working with local partners to create complete weekend packages and increasing our range of cars we’ve managed to buck the downturn.”

Great Escape provides classic cars on a self drive basis for weekend and weekday getaways. The company has a fleet of over 50 cars at four locations, ranging from a 1957 Morris Minor Traveller to a 1967 Aston Martin DB6. Great Escape has also invested significantly in modern classics from the 1980s, including models familiar to fans of Ashes to Ashes, Minder and The Professionals.

Great Escape was founded in 2006 by Graham Eason to combine his interest in classic cars with his experience in marketing. The business has grown through development of its fleet and through acquisition, in 2009 taking over the former Grand Touring Club business in Suffolk.

Classic car hire starts at £145 for 24 hours and every hire day includes a full 24 hours use, unlimited mileage, insurance and breakdown cover. For more details visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/, call 01527 893733 or email info@greatescapecars.co.uk.

The Jaguar XJS rocks

The Great Escape Classic Car Hire Jaguar XJS V12 convertible has been chosen by up and coming heavy rock band Jett Black to appear in the video for its new single 'Two Hot Girls.' The band wanted a four seater convertible that would fit the retro 1980s style they were looking for and the classic Jaguar fitted the bill.
The band collected the Jaguar from Great Escape's base in Worcestershire and used it on set in London overnight.
Great Escape supplies a lot of cars to TV, film, production and advertising companies for music videos and photo shoots but the Jaguar XJS is usually selected for traditional English roles. This is the first time that its quintessentially 1980s style has been used to effect. The Great Escape Jaguar XJS is best known for its role in the 2009 first series of Antiques Road Trips on BBC2.
A Jaguar XJS convertible also features in Swift Cover's current advertising campaign with Iggy Pop, so clearly its rock credentials are on the up.
You can find out more about the Jaguar XJS here and Jett Black here. The Jett Black video for Two Hot Girls will be out in about 6 weeks.

Our Porsche 928 is for sale

We are reluctantly selling our great Porsche 928 after a couple of years on our hire fleet. It's going to make way for two new additions - our new Mercedes SL in Yorkshire and our Alfa Romeo Spider in Suffolk.
Although the Great Escape Classic Car Hire Porsche 928 was not our top hirer it was consistently rated as one of the best cars on our fleet by hirers, who loved its looks, performance and sheer driveability. This car really is one of the most under-rated classic cars on the market. If Porsche had only made the 928 and it didn't live in the shadow if the 911 then values would be dramatically higher.
So, we're very sad to see it go but life goes on. If you want to buy the car we're auctioning it on Ebay from 17th July for 7 days. Click here to view the item.

Drive the ultimate dad's car with Great Escape Classic Car Hire

Great Escape Classic Car Hire has added one of the best British saloon cars of all time to its growing fleet of 1980s classic cars. In the 1980s the Rover SD1 Vitesse was the car every small boy wanted his dad to buy. With its elegant fastback styling and big spoilers, the Rover SD1 Vitesse had brutal performance and was Britain's very own Q-car. It was fast, handled well and looked right in the executive car park.
Now you can drive this aspiring 1980s classic car from Great Escape Classic Car Hire's central base in Worcestershire, on the edge of the Cotswolds. The 1988 silver car with grey velour interior is one of the last Rover SD1 Vitesse cars ever made and features the high performance 'Twin Plenum' engine delivering 190 bhp. The car is totally standard except for a slightly larger exhaust, which enhances the burble of the lovely V8 engine.
The Rover SD1 Vitesse is available to hire on a self drive basis for weekends and weekdays or on a chauffeur hire basis for weddings. It is a large 4 door saloon with rear seatbelts so ideal for sharing with family and friends.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire operates the largest fleet of classic cars for rental in the UK from bases in Worcestershire, Suffolk, Dorset and Yorkshire. The company has over 50 cars for hire including cars by Jaguar, Jensen, Mercedes Benz, Morris, Porsche, Volkswagen, Alfa Romeo, Triumph, Rolls Royce and Ford. The cars cover coupes, convertibles and saloons from the 1950s to 1990s.
"There is a lot of interest in the classic cars of the 1980s," says Graham Eason of Great Escape Classic Car Hire. "I grew up with cars like the Rover Vitesse, Ford Capri and VW Golf GTI and now they are icons.
"For many people who love these cars it is not practical to buy one. So hiring one for the day or weekend is a great alternative."

Jensen Interceptor makes music again

Great Escape Classic Car Hire has provided a car for the video to R&B star McLean's forthcoming new single. The production team chose the metallic blue Jensen Interceptor because of its 1970s high rolling GT style. The car, which has a cream interior, features heavily in the video.
The latest musical outing for the Jensen is quite a contrast to its last foray into the popular music scene, when it featured in the video for folk singer songwriter Alan Pownall.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire regularly provides classic cars for static and video photoshoots across the UK. The company operates a fleet of 50 classic cars from sites in Worcestershire, Suffolk, Dorset and Yorkshire.
"We provide cars for all kinds of shoots," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape. "Our cars cover all types of cars from the 1950s to 1990s and we can work to short notice deadlines anywhere in the UK."
The Jensen Interceptor featured in the music videos is available to hire by the day, weekend or week from Great Escape's base in Worcestershire. The company also has Jensen Interceptor cars for hire in Suffolk and Dorset.

Jaguar XJ6 adds 1970s glamour to photoshoot

A 1974 Jaguar XJ6 saloon from Great Escape Classic Car Hire has been specially selected for a glamorous fashion shoot because of its distinctive colour scheme. The creative team from fashion label Tucker loved the Sable with green interior Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 car and decided to feature it in the photo shoot for their new catalogue.
Great Escape delivered the car to The Master Shipwright's House in Deptford, London on Easter Friday at 7am for the day-long photo shoot. The unique waterfront location was selected to suit Tucker's London-themed shoot. The Jaguar XJ6 was chosen as a typically British 1970s saloon car and the colour scheme fitted right into the period feel.
The Tucker shoot is one of several music video and static photoraphy location projects that have featured Great Escape cars in 2010.
"We have a lot of experience of working with production teams," says Graham Eason of Great Escape. "It's important to be flexible. This shoot was short notice, on a Bank Holiday and involved a very early start. But we like that kind of challenge.
"Our 1974 Jaguar XJ6 saloon has quite an unusual colour scheme, which was very fashionable in the 1970s but lost favour in the 1980s and 1990s. We think it makes the car stand out, which is what you want when you hire a car. It's great to see that the car is once again fashionable."
The Great Escape Jaguar XJ6 is available to hire by the day, week or weekend from Great Escape Classic Car Hire's Worcestershire base.

Hire a 1950s classic Ford

The 1950s saw post-war austerity replaced with optimism and Baby Boomers. Our new Ford Consul convertible for hire from our site in Worcestershire sums up the times very well. Stylish but restrained, modern but not advanced, the Ford Consul brings to mind Grease and weekends on the south coast. We think it's a great addition to a wedding or as a weekend away classic car.

Our Ford Consul is finished in ivory with a cream and white interior and sits four people in comfort. The hood is easy to operate and finished in dark green, which goes well with the rest of the colour scheme.

Ford Consuls are a little before out time here at Great Escape and in fact recently we've been concentrating on adding 1980s classics like our Ford Capri 280 Brooklands. But when this Ford Consul became available for hire we couldn't resist - it just looks so good. And within a week of adding it on the fleet we have been taking bookings for it, so it seems that lots of people agree.

The Ford Consul from Great Escape Classic Car Hire can be hired by the day, week or weekend on a self drive basis. Or we can supply it chauffeur driven for weddings. Self drive hire prices include a full 24 hours use for every day you book, unlimited mileage, insurance for 1 driver and breakdown cover.

For more details visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk/ or call 01527 893733.

Jaguar XJS on BBC Antiques Road Trip

Great Escape Classic Car Hire's popular Jaguar XJS V12 convertible features in the new series of Antiques Road Trips which is shown during the week at 6.30pm on BBC2. The series involves antiques experts driving across the UK competing to earn the most money by buying and selling antiques.
The Jaguar XJS from Great Escape Classic Car Hire is heavily featured in the Cotswolds and Dorset section of the series, which airs in late March. The car is featured heavily in the show to transport the two experts between antique shops and sale rooms across the county.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire provided the 1988 Jaguar XJS for the series during August 2009. The car performed faultlessly and provided relaxing and highly comfortable transport for the production crew and show stars.
Great Escape's cars are regularly used for TV, film and video work and have featured in recent music videos, art pieces, magazine shoots - including for OK! magazine - and film.
If you would like to trace the route of the antiques experts then you can hire the Jaguar XJS from Great Escape in Worcestershire. The company will provide details of the route to follow.
